Beginner Runner Starter Pack

It’s been a minute since I’ve written my last blog post but I’ve been feeling inspired lately. Now that I’ve perfected my day-to-day routine and officially hit 9-months into my running journey, I thought I’d give a run down of my secret formula as a ✨beginner✨ runner. Details of my current stats, running routine, what I’ve purchased & more.

What made you want to start running?

My (now 😜) fiancé ran his first Chicago Marathon in October 2024. I was so inspired by his dedication and work he put into this goal that I told myself I would sign up for my first race this year in 2025. I have now completed a 5K (Run Mag Mile), 8K (Shamrock Shuffle) & 10K (Stars & Stripes) and have fallen in love with this hobby that I will be signing up for the Chicago Half Marathon next year!

What does your workout routine look like?

Shoutout to my man yet again for helping me get started on a plan. Once I got into my rhythm & routine, I followed the Nike Run Club training plans (we love a free resource 😏) and they have been EXTREMELY helpful. Coach Bennett is the best there is and wouldn’t be able to push through my runs without him. My running days during the week usually look like, mixed in with pilates & strength training twice a week:
Monday: Recovery run (zone 2 training)
Tuesday: Recovery run (zone 2 training)
Thursday: Speed run (tempo, fartlek, etc.)
Friday: Recovery run (zone 2 training)
Saturday/Sunday: Long run (this is falls around which day I have more plans in my schedule 💃🏻)

Best piece of advice for someone just starting?

  • Don’t compare yourself to where others are at in their running journey. IT’S YOU VS. YOU.

  • Invest in a GOOD running shoe. It will literally & figuratively go a long way.

  • ALWAYS stretch before (dynamic) & after (static) your runs.

  • HAVE FUN WITH IT! 🎉 Runners high is so real. It’s a blessing to be able to move your body & challenge yourself.
